Microsoft Outlook saves all of your personal information in PST files. By default, you have a single PST file named OUTLOOK.PST that contains all of your messages, contacts, schedules, tasks and newsgroups. The steps below explain how to locate this file and move it to your encrypted SafeHouse volume; and finally, how to tell Outlook to use the file from its new location.
Start Microsoft Outlook. The first thing you need to do is find out where Outlook is currently storing your email messages. This is done by following the steps below.
Right click on the "Personal Folders"
item in your Outlook folder view window pane. Select the "Properties
for Personal Folders" menu item.
Click the "Advanced..." button.
The Path field displays the current location of
your OUTLOOK.PST file. This is the file that contains all of your email
messages, contact lists, schedules and tasks. Write down this location.
You cannot change it here. You will shortly need to locate this file and
the only way to do it is to record its location as shown on this screen.
If the filepath bleeds off the right edge of the field, use your mouse
inside the field to force it to scroll and show the remaining portion
of the path.
Exit Outlook now. Do not leave it running.
Use Windows Explorer to locate your OUTLOOK.PST file. Look at its size. You will need to make sure that when this file is moved over to your SafeHouse volume, that you have plenty of room for the existing filesize as well as some growth. Leave the Explorer window open, you'll need to refer to it again in a minute.
Open the SafeHouse volume you wish to use to store your Outlook information. The drive letter you choose should be one that you intend to continue to use for this SafeHouse volume and your Outlook file(s), since Outlook will remember this drive letter during the next step.
Select a location on your SafeHouse drive to hold your OUTLOOK.PST file. If necessary, create a new directory. It can reside anywhere on the volume using any name you choose.
Use your mouse to drag the existing OUTLOOK.PST file from its current location to the location you've selected on your mapped SafeHouse volume. Do not leave a copy of this file in its original location since that will confuse Outlook. The file must continue to be named OUTLOOK.PST at its new location on your SafeHouse drive.
Run Outlook. It will immediately complain that it cannot find your OUTLOOK.PST file (that's okay, you moved it) and give you an opportunity to point to its new location. This is where you tell Outlook to get the file from your SafeHouse drive. Outlook will remember this setting and use this location from now on. Once you verify that everything is working as expected, it is safe to delete any safety copies of your PST file that you may have kept on your original drive.
From now on, be sure to open your SafeHouse volume using the same drive letter each time before starting Outlook.
